Locked Out

After a much eventful, yet exciting Saturday, we got home at 8:30 pm to find ourselves locked outside our home. Damn! We had forgotten to take our house keys since we (my husband and I) shared a ride with our friend.

Our friend suggested that we call a locksmith, and gave us  the number of a locksmith company. We requested our friend to go home since we all had a long day, and assured him that we will be fine. We opened the garage door, and sat inside our car, thinking like thieves on how to break into our own home before dialing the number. While wearing my thinking cap, I realized that being a thief wasn’t easy.

Anyways, since brainstorming wasn’t helping us, we  finally dialed the number of the locksmith. The locksmith reached our home after 40 long minutes. He appeared like a detective in one of those cop movies but when he began to converse, he emerged to be more of an ex-housebreaker. “How long have you been doing this (job)?” my husband asked. “For a looooong time, sir” he replied with a shadowy tone, and it freaked us out.

He then looked at our locks and said,” This is a rare kind of lock. I am not sure if I can pick it. I might have to drill through, and that would cost you a lot more”. However, he picked our difficult-to-open lock in less than 30 seconds. And of course, he also charged us a jaws dropping rate of $125 for his 30 second venture.

Moral of the story:
  • Always double check if you have taken your house keys. You never want to be at the mercy of a shady locksmith.
  • Always give a copy of your keys to couple of friends/ family that live close by.

That is terrible! 125/hr - Wow! :( Also something to try, find a spot in your yard to bury a key or keep a spare key in your purse.

@Sreedevi Bridget was talking about the hourly rate of the job, 10 seconds or 59 minutes it's the same rate.

I happened to my parents as well in Abu Dhabi, i learnt my lesson that day.

@Reaver: I wish he had an hourly rate. This guy's rate was based on labor.
